Welcome to Mystic Ninja! You have somehow stumbled onto a small shrine featuring the beautiful Sheena Fujibayashi from the RPG video game, Tales of Symphonia created by Namco. The shrine contains only one page, thus I will provide information of the character of Sheena as precisely as possible. This shrine only contains details about her character throughout the game as a whole, meaning information concerning Sheena's battle and in-game character will not be included. Most content shown is my opinion and my uncoordinated discussion about our sweet warrior.

if she knew how the universe only functioned
After Lloyd and Genis finally catch up with Colette and the Chosen group, they enter Ossa Trail to find a mysterious girl appears before them, claiming she has come to kill the Chosen, Colette Brunel. However, the assassin's first attempt fails when she falls down to a hidden maintenance passage, thanks to Colette's clumsiness. The group discovers the stranger's fighting style is foreign and rare in this world. Before Lloyd's group has the chance to exit Ossa Trail, the assassin reappears before them and attacks. Colette, however, is relieved to see she was not harmed and wishes to meet her again.
The second time Lloyd's group encounters the mysterious assassin happens when they find the girl praying to the Goddess Martel in the House of Salvation. Innocently, Lloyd and Colette starts introducing themselves which embarrasses the girl. After Colette calls her "Ms. Assassin", the mysterious assassin responds rashly, "It’s Sheena! Sheena Fujibayashi!" Shortly after, with bewilderment, Sheena will vanish using her ninja skills. The next time she comes on-screen is when the group enters the Temple of Water, however, the group does not come in contact due to the protection of Noishe.
Lloyd's group next finds Sheena in The City of Hope, Luin, playing tag with the kids, a peek at her true personality. Lloyd simply compliments her, but she runs away from the scene. The group continues to Balacruf Mausoleum, and after Colette completes the third seal of the journey, Sheena waits to attack the group after they exit the Balacruf Mausoleum. Colette simply says they are friends which angers Sheena. When Sheena loses the battle, a startling question surfaces: What did Sheena mean that their world would be saved while Sheena's world would not? When the group finds Sheena in Luin, what is now called The City of Ruin, they help her, and chances are Sheena will whole-heartedly join their group after feeling indebted for saving her life.
As the group continues their journey, we get to learn more about Sheena. She comes from Mizuho, a hidden village in the other world, Tethe'alla. She travels with the only man-made Summon Spirit named Corrine, thus also revealing that she possesses the skills of Summoning using cards as her weapons. In addition, Sheena was hired by the Pope and the King of Tethe'alla to get rid of the Chosen.
a past of mistakes that only haunts her
Although Sheena prides herself as a native from Mizuho, she does not have any Mizuho blood in her at all. In fact, she was an orphan found by her adoptive grandfather, the current Chief of Mizuho, in Gaoracchia Forest as an infant. Therefore, her origin and the gift of forming pacts with Summon Spirits somewhat remain a mystery. However, it is also revealed that Sheena might possess some elven blood, to be exact one-fourth. This most likely explains her ability of the Summoning arts.
Sheena, at that time only a mere seven year old child, travels to the Temple of Lightning with part of the people of Mizuho to make a pact with Volt, the Summon Spirit of Lightning. Not only did she fail to create a pact due to her inexperience in fighting skills and Volt's incomprehensible language, Volt flew into a rage, killing a quarter of the population of Mizuho and causing the Chief, Sheena's grandfather, to fall into a coma.
The tragic event left a brutal scar on Sheena's ego and life. Because of her skills, she already feels like an outcast, in addition to her being an orphan. She has always felt alone in the world. Sheena has always put in all her efforts and the fact that she accepted her mission to assassinate the Sylvarant's Chosen in the beginning of the game, delineates how much she wants acceptance from the people of Mizuho. She believed that by accepting the job to kill Colette will show her devotion to Mizuho and how much she cares for the village.
the girl who tries to protect what she believes
From the very start that we get to meet Sheena, you can tell that she carries a soft, yet tough nature. Sheena tends to act very tough, showing a tomboy side to others, but carries a good-natured side that slowly becomes more apparent throughout the storyline. She likes to rely on her tough facade, thus dislikes having to be rescued, like the time when Lloyd and his group saved her when she was attacked in Luin. However, she appreciates people's help because their support helps her grow as a person.
There were clearly many different chances she could have easily killed the Chosen. Even though the very first impression she leaves on the group was cold-hearted, this impression quickly melts when Sheena frequently hesistates and actually carries awkward, embarrassing conversations with Lloyd and the others. Sheena often stutters when she attempts to sound fearful.
Sheena: …W…wait!
Lloyd: …Wow, she caught up with us.
Colette: Oh, thank goodness!
Sheena: D…don’t move!
Raine: A wise decision.
Sheena: …I won’t be caught off guard this time! Prepare to die!
By the way she speaks, Sheena does not really want to kill Colette. No matter how hard she tries to sound menacing, she clearly reveals to us already that she does not possess such cold-blooded skills. Sheena continues to hesitate and stutter her speech which illustrates the difficulty Sheena bears to finish her mission.
Lloyd: My name’s Lloyd! What’s yours?
Sheena: What?…
Genis: Lloyd?
Colette: Ah, I’m Colette. I’m still inexperienced as a Chosen, but I promise I’ll do my best and regenerate the world.
Sheena: I never asked you your names!
Colette: Oh, you’re right. I’m sorry.
Sheena: I…I’m trying to kill you!
When Noishe blocks her from entering the Temple of Water, Sheena only gets frustrated and decides to summon out Corrine to try to somehow distract Noishe. Both of them, however, just stands and does literally nothing. From what I can see, an assassin must be cold-blooded and determined to take out his or her target no matter what gets in his or her way. Having Sheena only express her anger by cursing Noishe out emphasizes that Sheena is an amiable and merciful person, not at all hitman-material.
Furthermore, when Lloyd and company enters Luin, they find Sheena playing cheerfully with the children. From this point, I find myself more convinced that Sheena is truly a kind person. I feel that Sheena must have a true-hearted reason why she desires to halt the rejuvenation of the world, Sylvarant. She has some sort of compassion that she wants to fulfill, and although assassinating the Chosen does not echo 'heroism', I know Sheena desired to do such a crime in order to protect something she immensly cared for.
However, it is also clear that she does not carry confidence within herself as a ninja. She has trouble determining important choices. As I mentioned earlier, Sheena often appears tense and uncomfortable with her mission of assassinating the Chosen. She took the job because she wanted to prove something to her village, thus Sheena believed it was the right thing to do. Her past with Volt trembled her determination of her skills, thus when she first makes a pact with the Summon Spirit of Water, Udine, she first tells the group that she is "a little scared". The real fear kicks in when they travel to Tethe'alla to continue to make pacts with the Summon Spirits: and their first one happens to be Volt, the Summon Spirit of Lightning.
Tiga: Yes. Even if we recover the Rheairds, if Volt’s mana runs out, they will crash again. Thus, before recovering the Rheairds, you are going to form a pact with Volt.
Sheena appears shocked.
Tiga: I know it’s hard, but it is a test you must overcome.
Sheena: I…I can’t!
Sheena runs away from the scene, leaving the group stunned.
Tiga: Sheena failed to form a pact with Volt once before. …That is the reason why the Chief is in a coma.
Sheena fears that she will end up killing her friends when they battle with Volt, just like that previous time. When Lloyd talks with her, he tells her that she shall succeed because she has grown stronger and she has friends who will help her. Although still reluctant and afraid, Lloyd's encouragement and support touch Sheena deeply, and she agrees to form a pact with Volt. The same happens when a hallucination of Kuchinawa, a fellow member of Mizuho whose parents died the day of Volt's attack, continually degrades Sheena with his remarks, but Lloyd was there to help Sheena fight through and grow strong.
Kuchinawa: You grew up in Mizuho, yet you still can't tell if I'm real or an illusion? You really are a failure. Neither of you should have been born. Everyone would have been so much happier had you not been born! You brought misfortune upon the people of Mizuho.
Sheena: I… haven't brought misfortune to—
Kuchinawa: Can you really say you didn't? You, the coward who trembled before Volt and killed your comrades. Now, if you think you can run, run! You'll be devoured by the darkness and die!_______
Voice of real Lloyd: I'm not an illusion! Do you think it's better for the people of Mizuho to become part of the Age of Lifeless Beings? Besides, there's no way I'd go along with Mithos' ideals!
Sheena, however, still stays strong when the illusion of Kuchinawa belittles her. It is obvious that Sheena has grown during her journey with Lloyd and the others. She is kind by heart, but she needs people who deeply support her to help her bring out that side.
to chase the stars that light her way
Sheena longs for acceptance and support from the people she holds close in her heart. She does not try to show it often since this trait embarrasses her, so she usually gives a tough facade. She shows her anger easily, yelling frequently at people that annoys her. She is not afraid of showing that she is upset with someone.
After Corrine's death due to Volt's attack, a change within Sheena occured. For Corrine to die in vain would truly make Sheena a failure, but she did not go toward that path. She vowed to protect the worlds for the sake of the people that has always supported her. From then on, I can see more strength and courage within her. She also possess an altruistic personality. Sheena does not take her selfish needs as her major priority--she takes in consideration of what is fair. She gave Colette and the others an opportunity to explain about their journey and heir reasons for the world juvenation.
After discovering the depletion of mana in Sylvarant, Sheena felt she should help since everyone is human beings, just like herself. Her down to earth personality is revealed from her acknowledgement for such a problem. She does not let her own desires get in the way of everything else and other people's desires. She takes the time to listen and find another way to achieve her goals while still helping the people around her. She puts her assassination of the Chosen under hiatus to see what Lloyd and the rest had to do to save their world.
However, let's not forget that she could not have all of this self-discovery without her friends and the other people around her. Sheena is not strong on her own, and she is similar to every other human being out in the world. She needs her friends and her supporters to help her grow into who she is now. Even if Sheena carries a strong, resiliant personality on the surface, she depends on the people she trust to guide her way with her decisions. Without them, we could not see the Sheena we have by the end of the game.
With all these points in mind, Sheena also was named as the next Chief of Mizuho. Her dedication pushed through in the end, and her respect was earned, even though Sheena doesn't believe she deserve such a grand role, we all know she merit for the job.
love and hate; how she cooperates with people
The following discussed are the people I believe that somewhat made an impact on Sheena's current personality whether or not they play a major role in the game. Characters not mentioned most likely shares a mutual, calm relationship with Sheena.
Corrine; The only man-made Summon Spirit created by the Meltokio Laboratory. Corrine believes that Sheena saved his life by taking him with her away from the laboratory, away from the experiments that were excrutiating to Corrine. They have a very trustworthy partner-like relationship and appear to be good friends. Sheena believes Corrine to be her first and closest friend. After his death, Sheena is devasted, but from then on, she fights for him. They carry a very strong relationship out of the rest of characters. Later in the game, Corrine has a chance to reborn into another and stronger Summon Spirit, Verrius.
Lloyd Irving; The protagonist boy who has an ambitious and forgiving heart. It would seem that Sheena has a small crush on Lloyd shortly after she joined their journey. Lloyd and Sheena get off on a good foot in the very beginning, although Sheena does get irritated with Lloyd once in awhile, since it was Lloyd that does welcome Sheena to the group. He was the first person to fully trust Sheena. The two are similar since they believe in philanthropy. They both try to find ways to help all of mankind. They often agree in several situations, even though she has different ways of doing so. Lloyd is Sheena's main reason why she has grown as much as she did throughout the game. His support guides Sheena through many things, especially during the Making-A-Pact-With-Volt event. Sheena opened up more because of him, even though she has a hard time telling him how she feels about him. Depending on how one plays the game, it is possible for Sheena to confess her feelings to him and have Lloyd return her feelings.
Colette Brunel; The Chosen out to rejuvenate her world despite her troubles. Their relationship actually starts off well regardless of Sheena's current assignment: to kill the Chosen to save Tethe'alla. Colette always have acted kindly towards Sheena, and how could Sheena not return the favor? They both trust each other equally and continue that same relationship to the very end.
Raine Sage & Kratos Aurion; The two adults who try to make the most mature decisions. I placed these two in the same category for they both share the same relationship with Sheena. At first, Raine and Kratos disliked the idea of having Sheena in their group. Raine was often cold to Sheena, and Kratos did not acknowledge Sheena often. They both mistrusted her. However, as Sheena fights her problems, they begin to symphatize Sheena. In the end, both Raine and Kratos give their respect towards Sheena.
Zelos Wilder; The Chosen of the other world that seems like he could care less. I think Sheena and Zelos carry a complicated relationship. Sheena often yells at Zelos, coericing and showing hatred towards him. However, they are actually really good friends as it is shown through skits in which they discuss the events. Sheena does believe that he is a good person notwithstanding the fact that he sometimes act like a jerk and player. It truly devasted Sheena to find out Zelos' real intention as the chosen of Tethe'alla. Depending on how one plays the game, Sheena can appear to be crying as Zelos live his last breaths.
Kuchinawa; The ninja with a grudging heart. Even though in the end their relationship settles down, Kuchinawa will never forgive for Sheena's failure in the past. Among the quarter of the population of Mizuho that was killed during Volt's outrage was Kuchinawa's parents. He harbored the hatred for Sheena until he joined the Pope to operate his dirty moves for revenge. Unlike his brother, Orichi, who has forgiven Sheena, Kuchinawa could not get past the fact that not only did she fail to make the fact, Sheena abandons her mission of assassinating the Chosen. In additon, he believed she was not taking her job seriously, thus not caring about anything about Mizuho. After the one-on-one battle with Sheena, despite the results, Kuchinawa leaves Mizuho. Sheena still hopes he will return to Mizuho, his true home.
in the end of it all everything has its worth
Even though I play as Lloyd majority of the time throughout the game, I play as Sheena whenever the team splits up (yeah, that one time lol). She is my favorite female character and I'm not surprised since like I mentioned earlier, Sheena and Lloyd have their similarities. I have always wanted to create a shrine for at least one character for Tales of Symphonia and I'm glad I finally got out doing so. Sheena is a tough, but kindhearted girl who only wants to do what she believes is beneficial for everyone.
